Sarmīte is the first Whirl in Latvian language! The alphabet is based on Latin but the accents make the letters sound completely different. Also, certain combinations of two letters (diphthongs) create completely different sounds. If the writing would be created from scratch, by my count, there would be a lot more than 33 letters…
